    Peterson Real-Fyre Gas Logs

For over 50 years, Peterson Real-Fyre Gas Logs have provided a natural wood-like fire with maximum ease, efficiency and economy.

Real-Fyre Gas Logs are manufactured to exacting specifications and the highest standards by R. H. Peterson Company. All Real-Fyre gas log sets are detailed with high definition bark and natural colors for authentic wood realism. Many also have hand-painted highlights that match natures beauty and variety. Peterson Real-Fyre Gas Logs burn cleaner than smoke-producing wood fires, reducing pollution. Their beauty and warmth provide comfort and pleasure for as long as you own your home.

A Peterson Real-Fyre Gas Log set, blazing or not, becomes the focus of any home as it always presents an attractive log stack. Texture and visual impact mark Real-Fyre Gas Log sets. For use with natural or propane gas, they invite fireside warmth.

    Real-Fyre Steel Rods
    Steel Reinforcing Rods
To further add to the integrity of Peterson Real-Fyre Gas Logs, precisely sized and designed steel rods are inserted into each log. This provides maximum reinforcement and prevents breakage.

    Superior Materials
Peterson Real-Fyre gas logs are made of superior refractory ceramics, expanded shades and aggregates and use an advanced calcium aluminate binder. This combination of materials, pre-fired in a rotary kiln, provides:

    • Greater compressive strength
Allowing finer detailing in the log making process without breaking or chipping, and producing a longer lasting log.

    • Higher bulk density
Providing more radiant heat, both while in operation, and after the set has been turned off, especially when compared to gas logs made with vacuum formed fibers.

    • Better rheology (flow rate)
Meaning a better texture to the logs, fewer “bugholes”, better strength, and less water in the mix, for better consistency of product.

    • Higher refractoriness
Our refractory material has a Pyrometric Cone Equivalent of 2650 degrees (F), higher than any other log and higher PCE means better ability to withstand heat over time. Our logs won’t break down.

    • Lower iron content
Other materials have 50-900% more iron! Iron turns to iron oxide and changes the color of logs. Real-Fyre Gas Log Systems are accepted by most national and local building codes and authorities, and are available with one or more of the following listings or certifications: C.S.A., C.G.A., R.A.D.C.O., I.C.B.O., B.O.C.A.

    Peterson Gas Logs Series Comparison

Watch this VideoView a Video on Peterson Gas Log Series
Peterson Real-Fyre vented gas logs are available in many different styles. Each is a beauty in its own way and with so many choices, it may be hard to narrow your selection down to just one set. To help choose the best set for your home, it may be helpful to understand the differences between their three series of vented gas logs - Classic, Designer and Charred.

    Classic -
The entry level to Peterson gas logs. The Classic look that made Peterson famous. Simple styling that's ruggedly handsome and environmental friendly.

    Designer-
The same rugged look of the Classic Peterson logs but with more natural color and bark details. Notice with the Designer series, the ends of the logs and the split pieces are a different color than the bark giving a much more realistic appearance.

    Charred-
The Charred series offers the ruggedness of all Peterson logs, the color and detail of the Designer series and amazing burned through realism. Enjoy the beauty of the burned through front log to see more flames and embers and give the appearance of a fire that has been burning all day

    Peterson Real-Fyre Control System Breakdown

Fingertip control that’s easy & reliable!
Real-Fyre Remote Control Systems are designed to provide the ultimate in convenient and reliable lighting of Real-Fyre Gas Log Sets. With a number of optional remote control features available, these systems come with a gas valve, pilot assembly (for instant lighting), basic remote receiver and transmitter, and protective heat shield. All our control systems use valves certified to ANSI Standards.

The SPK/APK/EPK Control Systems are easy to install, use no electricity, increase air flow to the valve, have heat shielding for greater protection, and include a built-in safety feature that shuts off gas flow should the pilot flame go out. All our control systems are certified to ANSI Standards for Natural and Propane gas.

Since all Peterson remote will not work with every pilot kit, the compatibility chart below should help explain which remote work with which valves. In years past, you had to choose the remote depending upon which valve you wanted. Keep in mind that new for 2006, all Peterson remote pilot kits now come with a basic remote transmitter and receiver, greatly simplifying your control system decision*.

    * If you choose a control system that comes with a basic remote and you decide to purchase a deluxe remote as well, you will end up with both the basic and the deluxe remote. At this time, Peterson does not make any remote pilot kits that come with a deluxe remote.

Due to certain BTU restrictions, not every pilot kit can be used with every size burner.

See the remote breakdown, the remote/ pilot kit compatibility chart and the pilot kit/ burner configuration compatibility chart below to determine which control system is right for you and your fireplace.

    Peterson Real-Fyre Burner Comparison

    Vented:

The two most popular Peterson Real-Fyre vented gas log burners are the G4 and the G45 and those are the models that we carry. It may be helpful to understand the differences between them to help you choose the right burner for your fireplace.

Watch this VideoView a Video on Peterson Vented Gas Log Burners

Glowing Coals Burner (G4 and GX4 Series)
This base model G4 burner is characterized by a single pipe running from left to right within the burner pan. Their are holes in the bottom of the pipe spanning the entire length of it for the gas to come from, providing maximum flame coverage. The silica sand spread over the pipe (vermiculite for LP applications) and the glowing embers atop that add depth to the flame so rather than just one wide row of flames, you get a more realistic flame pattern

    * Burner systems exceeding 90,000 BTUs are not included in the RADCO listing.

    Triple T Burner (G45 Series)

The G45 offers the same pipe burner as the G4 but adds a "T" shaped, extra front burner which accentuates front ember presentation and adds even more depth to the flame, while maximizing warmth. With this burner, you will see more glowing embers and a small row of front flames, again adding more realism for your fireplace.

C.S.A. Advanced Glowing Ember Burner (G46 Series)

While the G4 and the G45 are the most popular Peterson burners, the G46 burner is growing in popularity because it is certified to ANSI standards, a requirement in some parts of the country. This patented Ribbon Burner Technology System features a control valve with built-in regulator and piezo ignition system. For Natural and L.P. Gas, they are only available in standard configurations - no see-thru sets available. From 40,000 to 65,000 BTUs, available with factory installed manual safety pilot, basic on/off remote control (-11 series) or variable flame height remote (-15 series). Another benefit is that the pre-installed components (pilot kit, ignitor, regulator) are all neatly contained within the angled sides and the rear of the burner system rather than having a bulky pilot kit sticking out of one side or the other!

G46 burners are not available with all Peterson vented gas log styles. Of the log styles that we carry, the styles that aren't avaialble for use with a G46 burner include:

    Burnt Heritage Oak

    Outdoor Stainless Steel (G4-SS)
Any Peterson vented log set that is available with the regular G4 burner is also available with the Outdoor Stainless Steel G4-SS burner. This burner is just like the G4 with the exception that it is made of 18 guage stainless steel and is ready to handle the elements outdoors. Availble in natural gas and propane, you can finally have just as nice of a log set outside as you do inside. The propane model comes with a pre-assembled manual safety pilot, contained in a stainless steel protective enclosure. It is not recommended to add any of the Peterson manual or remote pilot kits as they are not deisgned to handle the conditions of an outdoor application.

Pre-installed ignition system standard on propane units as shown.

    Other Peterson Vented Burners
Peterson also makes other vented gas log burners (usually designed for one specific gas log style only) including:

EPIC burners are made for the Mammoth Pine oversized log sets only. These sets are only available in 36", 48" and 60" sizes. They are available in both natural gas and propane, standard and see thru and all come with a pre-assembled, basic on/off remote control system. The burner features plenty of flame from the one row burner (similar to G4) but no glowing ember bed.

FPB55 Flat Pan burners are made for the Sierra Pine log sets. They feature a burner within a pan enclosed on all sides, holding the glowing embers inside rather than them sprawling out like the more popular burners. They are certified to ANSI standards and are not available in see-thru configurations.

G45-GL and PB burners are what's available with the Peterson Fire Glass sets. These are both very basic burners. With the G45-GL burner, the glass sprawls out of the front of the burner to the fireplace floor (like glowing embers in a regular gas log set) whereas all of the glass is contained within the PB (pan burner) burner.

    Peterson Specialty Sets

Peterson knows that not all customers have the exact same fireplace and/or the exact same preferences. Because of this, they make several log sets with unique charateristics for the customer that might need something special.

    Split Personality
Real Fyre Split Personality gas logs offer the versatlity of using the original log stack or reversing each log within the set for a totally different look.

The Peterson styles that feature Split Personality include Rugged Split Oak and Charred Rugged Split Oak

    Shallow Depth
If you have a fireplace that is not as deep as a standard sized fireplace, you need a gas log set that will fit perfectly. Peterson delivers with two styles that are only 9 1/2" deep. The Golden Oak Designer Plus in 12", 16" and 19" widths and the Charred Oak in the 16" width are the log sets you want to choose from.

    Only 9 1/2" Deep!

    Low Set Height
If you have a smaller fireplace and need a set with a little less height than normal, Peterson makes two styles just for you. The "low set" versions of the Golden Oak Designer and Split Oak log sets (only available with the G46 burner) feature smaller top logs than the regular size sets, making the entire set not stack up as high. You can imagine with the smaller top logs, the overall height of your log set can be reduced by a few inches.

Example: The 18" Golden Oak Designer Plus set features four top logs measuring 15",12", 9" and 9". However the top logs of the 18" Golden Oak Designer (Low Set) set measure 10",10",8" and 8".

NOTE - Because there is no "set" way to stack your logs, it is impossible to give exact dimensions of log set heights.

    Low BTU
When you are putting a gas log set in a bedroom or maybe just a smaller room, you may not want a bunch of heat. Luckily, Peterson has an answer for you. The Valley Oak Vent Free log set is available with a burner that only produces 9,500 BTU, perfect for a bedroom. The Valley Oak is also avaible with a 20,000 BTU burner in case you would prefer a little more heat but don't need the 30,000 plus BTU of other log sets.

Another consideration is the location of the gas supply line. In most fireplaces the gas supply enters from the side wall. Entering from the floor can be problematic if in the center of the fireplace. Your installer may need to break pieces of your fireplace floor in order to access the gas pipe and route it to the side.

    Rasmussen Gas Logs

Rasmussen is a manufacturer of Vented Gas Log Sets and Chillbuster™ Vent-free Gas Log Sets. Rasmussen offers products with cutting edge technologies and designs with the quality and service you would expect from a four-generation family business.

    Quality Products Since 1907

Four Generations of Rasmussen family members have proudly designed and produced innovative products in Whittier, California. It was 1907 when Rasmussen Rasmussen, a Danish immigrant, opened his blacksmith shop on Philadelphia St. in Whittier, CA. In addition to more traditional blacksmith services, Rasmussen quickly developed a sideline business making fancy fireplace tools and screens.

Through the decades the business evolved and changed, Rasmussen Iron Works made everything from truck body parts, to steel buildings, to welding rod handles used to build ships for WWII. After the war, Rasmussen’ son, Ted Sr., opened a fireplace retail store in front of the manufacturing shop. Among the items he carried were gas logs.

It would be Ted Sr.’s son T.R. that would make a breakthrough in gas logs in 1958. After seeing a plumber trying to bubble natural gas through water to create a “dancing flame” effect for a restaurant’s waiting area, T.R. developed the sand pan burner, which is still sold today and still provides the most realistic wood flame available in a gas log set.

When he couldn't’t find a manufacturer to make logs for him, T.R. developed his own molding technique, using real wood logs as patterns and capable of reproducing the smallest bark detail in the finest refractory materials available.

There is now a fourth generation of Rasmussen working out of the facilities on Philadelphia Street. The innovations have continued, including the Chillbuster line of gas log heaters and the Solaire Infrared Grills. Through all the changes over the years, craftsmanship, value, and industry leadership have been the constants at Rasmussen Iron Works, Inc.

9" "C9" Dual Burner CoalFire Sets (C9A=16" front width; C9B=20" front width)
14" "CR" Dual Burner with Infrared sets

Another consideration is the location of the gas supply line. In most fireplaces the gas supply enters from the side wall. Entering from the floor can be problematic if in the center of the fireplace. If this is so, the CS on legs (2.25" clearance underneath the pan) and LC (due to the open space underneath the rear burner) burners may be the only viable burner options.

Rasmussen Vented vs Vent-Free Log Sets

Please consider the following factors when deciding between vented pan burner and heat-effect gas log sets:

CHILLBUSTER: These sets are designed, certified and manufactured by Rasmussen to two nationally recognized consensus standards: ANSI Z21.11.2 Unvented Heaters and Z21.60 Decorative Gas Appliances. This permits Chillbuster Heat-Effect Gas Log Sets to be sold and used in any jurisdiction, regardless of their position on vent-free use or the position of the chimney damper.

Safety: Rasmussen only sells safe products and has been doing so for over 95 years. You enhance and ensure the safety of the product by properly installing and operating it in accordance with the instruction manual and applicable codes and ordinances. All heat-effect gas heaters are equipped with oxygen depletions sensors (ODS) and safety control valves to shut down the unit in case of unhealthful oxygen levels or in the event of an interruption in gas supply or flameout. Vented pan burner sets may be ordered with safety control valves to shut down the unit in the event of an interruption in gas supply or flameout.

Efficiency: Heat-effect sets are the best products if you desire a supplemental and/or emergency heat source for the room in which the fireplace is located. Since the damper may be closed, there is no heat loss up the chimney. Please note that heat-effect heaters, like all gas burning appliances, require fresh air for proper combustion and customer satisfaction. With heat-effect heaters used in the vent-free mode, the products of combustion vent into the living space; with vented pan burner gas logs, the products of combustion vent up the chimney. Some people are more sensitive to the natural odor associated with the burning of gas, which can be exacerbated with a lack of adequate fresh air in heat-effect applications.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION about “Partially Vented” or “Reduced Vent” Gas Log Sets:

A few manufacturers of gas log sets have introduced gas log sets that purport to allow the consumer to close the damper to a minimum opening while enjoying rich, yellow flames and more heat in the room. The basis for their claim is a chart in the National Fuel Gas Code that specifies minimum venting area based on BTUs consumed. The manufactures reduced the BTU use from their standard fully vented gas log sets to a point where the chart allows for a smaller damper opening, which would keep more of the heat in the room. The PROBLEM with these sets is that they all produce soot and the soot is either going to go up the chimney or out into the room. The market experience is that the specified “reduced vent” openings are not sufficient to always exhaust all of the products of combustion up the chimney, therefore putting soot into the living space (which can be harmful to health and furnishings). The only TRUE SOLUTION for someone who wants to close the damper to a setting less than full open is to use a HEAT EFFECT gas log set (such as a CHILLBUSTER) that has been certified to ANSI Z21.11.2 Unvented Heater Standard, since these sets are not permitted to produce any soot.

Aesthetics: "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." Rasmussen manufactures what we consider to be the best looking vented pan burner and heat-effect gas log sets available. The national standard for vent-free heaters is very restrictive in ways that limit the flame appearance (40,000 BTU/hour maximum input; lowest level of carbon monoxide allowed of any gas burning appliance, no carbon (soot) formation). The flame characteristics of a vented pan burner pan burner set are fuller (more BTUs) and more wood-like in appearance. Since the yellow, smoky flame produces carbon (soot), and the standards to which these sets are certified allow more carbon monoxide than heat-effect sets, the damper must be open when operating a vented pan burner pan burner set. Since most fireplaces are very inefficient with the damper open, much of the heat is lost up the chimney. However, the ceramic logs radiate some heat into the room, as do the burning embers. Additionally, one gets a warm feeling from the presence of the flame itself.

Soot: Heat-effect gas log sets are not permitted to soot by the vent-free standard to which they are certified. This makes them well suited for “smoking” fireplaces (those that do not draw or vent properly). Vented pan burner gas logs sets are designed to burn with a yellow smoky flame that produces soot. Vented pan burner sets require that the chimney flue exhaust al of the products of combustion up the chimney, otherwise the soot will enter into the living space.

Product Size Selection: Heat-effect gas log sets are available in 18-, 24- and 30-inch sizes with various log appearances and burner styles. Vented pan burner log sets are available in sizes ranging from 12- to 60-inches, with custom sets available for large and unusual fireplaces. We currently offer 14 styles of vented pan burner log sets.

Summary: Heat-effect gas log heaters (like CHILLBUSTER) give you the best heat value from your gas dollar spent. They also give you flexibility of venting, as you can safely use them with no or little damper opening, as desired and permitted by local jurisdiction. The vented pan burner set better approximates the aesthetics of a wood fire. The choice is yours based on your needs and desires.
